Traumatic Brain Injuries
You do not have to lose consciousness, or even hit your head, to suffer a brain injury.
Traumatic brain injuries are among the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed injuries that follow a serious accident. At Sexton & Masri Law Firm, we have represented many clients whose brain injuries were initially missed or dismissed entirely by the doctors who treated them. That experience has shaped the way we approach every case involving head trauma, and it is why we take these claims so seriously.
Brain injuries are also among the hardest cases to get right. The long-term impact on a person's ability to work, maintain relationships, and enjoy daily life can be enormous, and building a case that truly reflects that requires both legal skill and a deep familiarity with the medical side of these injuries. This is not the kind of case to hand to a firm without experience in this area.
What is a traumatic brain injury?
Many people are surprised to learn that a loss of consciousness is not required for a traumatic brain injury to occur. In fact, we regularly work with clients who never hit their head at all, yet still sustained a significant brain injury as a result of the forces involved in their accident.
The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine defines a mild traumatic brain injury as an injury involving any of the following:
- Any period of loss of consciousness
- Loss of memory for events immediately before or after the accident
- Any change in mental state at the time of the accident
- Neurological deficits that may be temporary or lasting
Even a "mild" traumatic brain injury can be anything but mild in terms of its effect on a person's life. Cognitive difficulties, personality changes, chronic headaches, memory problems, and difficulty concentrating are just a few of the ways these injuries can quietly upend everything a person knew as normal.
